The NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.
ACT-SO includes 26 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, business, and performing and visual arts. More than 260,000 young people have participated from the program since its inception.
The ACT-SO competition is a national program that is designed to encourage, develop, and recognize academic and artistic excellence among African American high school students in grades 9th to 12th. ACT-SO is a major youth initiative founded in 1978 by renowned author and journalist Vernon Jarrett.
Nationals will host the 33rd Annual ACT-SO competitions in Los Angeles, CA, July 20-24th, 2011.
Dr. Yvette Butler is the Montgomery County, Maryland ACT-SO Chair who is faithfully leading our Montgomery County gold medalists. Our fourteen gold medalists are as follows:

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett invites the public to the County’s 15th Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Thursday, June 16, at 7 p.m., at the BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown. This year’s celebration will include the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Choir, an Underground Railroad re-enactment, the Montgomery County NAACP’s ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) award-winning student performing artists, a story teller, coded songs and presentation of a community service award. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its enslaved persons. The program is sponsored by the Montgomery County Executive’s Office of Community Partnerships, the Office of Human Resources’ EEO Compliance Unit, the Office of Human Rights and the Montgomery County Coalition of Black Police Officers.
